ROLE OF FAMILY IN CHILDREN’S SUCCESS

Prof. Madhav Ch. Satpathy

It is a proven fact that family is the first school of children. Many traits of personality is formed by the family. Family’s influence is the greatest influence on child’s learning, achievement and character. It is found that children from broken homes become delinquent and antisocial. Much depends on the congenial environment of the family. If the parents are emotionally calm, then their children will have control over their emotions. Emotion plays a great role in learning. By research it was found that-academic achievement has a correlation of + 6 with the intelligence (I.Q) and +5 with emotion (E.Q). Hence a child with above average intelligence will secure high marks in examinations if his (E.Q) emotional quotient is high, that is if he is emotionally attached to his subjects. If a child has no control over his emotion, then he is wayward, aggressive, disobedient etc. Environment of a family has three categories. They are:

1. Autocratic environment, where parents are sole authority and bring up their children under stern discipline. Their children will be reactive and aggressive.

2. Semi-autocratic environment, where parents sometimes become considerate but never allow their children to speak freely. Their children will be semi autocratic.

3. Democratic environment, where everybody is free to express his views. Children of this environment are normal, successful and good learners.

In this respect the research of A. Mills of Columbia University is praiseworthy. He has studied family condition of successful persons for nearly 20 years. How the role of family made their children to be successful in different works of life according to his findings.

1. They do not confine their children in the home, on the contrary give them ample independence to do what they like.

2. They do not discourage their children to  do petty works where there is little danger, say to handle electric bulbs. Even they encourage children of 2/3 years to carry cups-plates. It is needless to say that most parents do not allow these children to handle cup-plates thinking they may break it.

3. They do not command or warn their children. Lack of warning tinged with encouragement help a child to develop positive thinking.

4. They do not keep their children routine-bound, rather ask them to adjust their own time.

5. They encourage children to express freely their desire and even their decision.

6. They accept children’s right needs and honour children’s opinion.

7. They  are quite familiar with their children’s behaviour and as such take maximum care to build their children’s career.

Family is an agency of education and this agency is the foundation-agency of children. Due to nuclear family now, father and mother have tremendous responsibility to build their children’s future. Where a child lives with his grandparents, his E.Q. is greater that he who lives in a nuclear family. So parents of nuclear family may see the emotional stability of their children.
