Dr. Dolgobinda Shastri
A Sanskrit proverb goes as thus –
Satyam Bruiyat
Priyam Bruiyat
Ma Bruiyat Satyam Apriyam
Which means – Speak the truth
Speak sweet words
But never speak unpleasant truth.
Long before our independence in 1947, the world famous Soviet leader Lenin had to express one naked truth pointing the then western intellectuals.
He said – “We Westerners are educated savages where as Indians are illiterate sages”. He used the word illiterate in the sense that most the Indians were not conversant in English language. Because, by then, most of our Vedic and epic scriptures- the world famous literatures of ancient and modern times, were available translated in German, French and English languages. It goes without saying that, Lenin must have been acquainted himself with at least some important publications.
But Alas! We, the citizens of a vastly populated sub-continent like India, enjoying sixty years of independence and sovereignty, now running after converting our next generation as educated Savages like the then westerns, whereas the past and present educated and cultured wise men or western hemisphere not only mere praise, moreover, they pay homage and aspire to follow the life-style of the Indian sages of the past and present. At present they contribute billions of dollars to the spiritual centres inside India and also for setting up spiritual centres in their countries. They had sufficient bitter experience in leading savage life style only confined to four animal instincts of eating, sleeping, procreating and protecting.

The words ‘savage’ and ‘sage’ need explanation in the definition. Sage means wise, judicious, philosopher, spiritual, honourble, respect deserving, seer, prudent etc. Savage means wild, rude, cruel, unpolished, fierce, barbarian, brute and the like.
Most of the philosophers of western world uphold the theory that man is a “social animal”, i.e. man is animal no doubt, but social.
On the other hand, Indian philosophy never stops there. At least ten thousand years before Christ, the Indian sages or seers boldly declared –
Srunwantu Viswe Amritasya Putra,
All animals, whether terrestrial or aquatic or aerial, possess the five, main elements i.e., eather, air, fire, water and earth, as constituents of physical forms. So also with the trees, creepers as they also have life. All kinds of living objects undergo-birth, growth, decay and death.
Within our physical structure, there is an eatherical subtle form which is named as Linga-Sarira or Subtle body. It’s constituents are named as Mana (mind), Buddhi (intellect), Chitta (emotion), and Ahankara (Ego). Except human beings, in all other animal species, the subtle ingredient is almost dormant,
only four animal qualities– hunger, sleep, fear and lust are common.
Prior to some thousands centuries of Christian era, Indian society, culture, literature, science, grammar, spiritual pursuit, astronomy, philosophy, logic, business, farming, marine adventure etc. reached the climax. Whereas human inhabitants of all other parts of the earth, were just above the hill-tribes.
Now we are in the first decade of 21st century. We see as broad day light, that crores of world population find peace and solace under the feet of Indian Sadhus or spiritual Gurus, be he a Karma-yogi, or Gyana-yogi or Bhakti-yogi or Kriya-yogi.
The Westerners now have been over-fed of sensual enjoyment to their hearts content, but no peace, no sleep, only suffering from all sorts of physical and mental diseases. They have experienced the consequent of abundance of sensual enjoyment which brings diseases only in the later age of life and make living miserable till death.
But our young generation is hankering after only a fat salary and luxurious life and nothing else. The second half of life must suffer from all sorts of modern diseases such as diabetes, blood pressure, heart and kidney troubles, AIDS, cancer. Nobody can escape from such ill fate – “Bhoga breeds Roga”
Sensual enjoyment brings disease only.
We must make a hey while the sun shines, otherwise we shall repent, but no escape.
Our Artha and Kama must be controlled by Dharma, otherwise, we are nowhere. Simply leading a life of educated beast or savage is no living at all.

Prahlad, a boy of 5+ and would be heir to the throne of a vast empire of the most powerful demon king, was so much matured that he did not hesitate to warn his relatives - friends in the royal harem, as thus
“Kaumara acharet pragnya Dharman Bhagavatan iha”
You all should act according to the Bhagabat-Dharma i.e. the Dharma as advised by God himself. Otherwise you will perish. Who knows at any moment we may leave this body. We should not wait till the last quarter of our life.
