Dr. Dolgobinda Shastri
Man cannot live on bread alone. This is the sharp difference between the social animal man and other animals on the earth. Western thinkers of the 20th century designated man as animal only with a little difference that man is social. But Eastern, especially Bharatiya thinkers are of the opposite view. They say man is never an animal, in spite of the four animal instincts i.e. eating, sleeping, protecting and breeding. Their concept of human being is:-
“Shrunantu Visva Amritasya Putrah”- i.e. man is a product of divine Ambrosia or Amrit.
The argument is –
“Ahara, Nidra, Bhaya, Maithunancha Samanya metat
Pasuvirnaranam Dharmo hi tesam Adhika-Visesah Dharmenahinah
pasuvihsamanah”.
Alas! The present day 21st century-Bharatiya intellectuals boast – feel proud, prefer to be educated, civilized animals or savages confining themselves only in the above four animal instincts. Still more pathetic feature is seen when we see that some of our present day young boys and girls blindly competing to imitate and achieve most ultra-modern western habits and mode of living, simply confirmed to animal-instincts, which is contrary and quite opposite to our age-old refined, hygienic, and spiritual based habit and living standard.
We, the citizens of a vastly populated sub-continent like India are now converting our next generation as educated Savages like the westerns. On the other hand, the present educated and cultured wise men of western hemisphere not only mere praise, more over, they pay homage and aspire to follow the life-style of the Indian sages of the past and present. They have sufficient bitter experience in leading savage life style only confined to four animal instincts of eating, sleeping, procreating and protecting. Sage means wise, judicious, philosopher, spiritual, honourable, respect deserving, seer, prudent etc. Savage means wild, rude, cruel, unpolished, fierce, barbarian, brute and the like.
Prior to some thousand centuries of Christian era, Indian society, culture, literature, science, grammar, spiritual pursuit, astronomy, philosophy, logic, business, farming, marine adventure etc. reached the climax where as human inhabitants of all other parts of the earth, were just above the hills-tribes. Now we are in the first decade of 21st century. We see as broad day light, that crores of world population finds peace and solace under the feet of Indian Sadhus or spiritual Gurus. The Westerners now have been over-fed of sensual enjoyment to their hearts content, but no peace, no sleep, only suffering from all sorts of physical and mental diseases. They have experienced the consequent of abundance of sensual enjoyment which brings diseases only in the later age of life and make living miserable till death.
But our young generation is hankering after only a fat salary and luxurious life and nothing else. The second half of life must suffer from all sorts of modern diseases such as diabetes, blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, AIDS etc. No body can escape from such ill fate as –“Bhoga breeds Roga” - Sensual enjoyment breeds disease only. We all must make a hey while the sun shines, other wise we shall repent, but no escape. Our Artha and Kama must be controlled by Dharma, other wise, we are no where. Simply leading a life of educated beast or savage is no living at all.
