HOW TO RECTIFY DYSLEXIA

Prof. Madhav Ch. Satpathy

Dyslexia is a type of inability to read. Many children under the age of 7 years have this disease, though it is not a disease in true sense of the term. The difficulty with such children is to recognize letters as a result they fail to read written text. Severe dyslexia may be referred to counsellors, but mild type can be rectified at home. They are:-

1. Start with bold or big letters either printed or hand written, better printed letters.

2.Sit with the child and ask him to read, if he fails you read for him. Repeat this practice for each word at least 4 to 5 times.

3. Bring a blackboard or blackboard cloth to home and hang it on the wall. Write the word in big letters, size of  1 inch high and ask the child to write it on the same blackboard.

4. Use picture story where the story is clear in the picture. If the child does not understand the picture, narrate the picture to him, then ask him to read the contents of the story.

5. Ask him to observe minutely to your leap movement when you utter a word very slowly letter by letter and spell the word to him.

6. In the TV names of serials, messages are sometimes flashed with bold and clear letters. Ask him to read.

7. To facilitate reading much writing is necessary. So make him practice writing as many times as possible.

8. Never think that they are mentally retreated. They perform normal activities, have no speech difficulties, have normal conversation like normal children. The disability starts very early, may be due to over protection, lack of parental care, absence of peer group, or too much authoritarian control. Some times it disappears automatically after 7/8 years or may prolong to 9 to 10 years. If it does not disappear after 7 years, there is concern for parents.

9. Before going to counsellors or psychologist, check his/her eyesight, lips and vocal chord. These are responsible for dyslexia. If there is no defect in these organs, then there is  nothing  to worry. Your continuous help will make him normal. Under no circumstances the child should be rebuked, beaten or reprimanded. Your patience and perseverance are too essential and most required factors to rectify dyslexia.

10. If he has some of the above defects, consult a counsellor. In some states, special centres are there to rectify dyslexia. On the whole if the child’s all organs are OK, repeated trial  will rectify this defect.
