WHY DO SOME CHILDREN BULLY?

Bullying is now- adays a very common trend among children. It has become a fashion. Some children take it as their credit, and the path to be highlighted and famous. Most parents do not take bullying seriously. The school authorities also don’t take it seriously either. Many children victimized of bullying are feeling alone and unsafe. Bullying hampers mental and physical health and also academic performance.

What is bullying:- Bullying involves intentional and repeated actions and words designed to threaten or hurt another person. The bullies are aggressive children and lack sympathy for others. They want to feel important by dominating others. Bullies begin their aggressive behaviour at an early age, and continue to do so for many years.

Why do some children bully? :- Only about 15 to 20 percent of children are involved in bullying. There are many reasons why some children bully others.  Children who do not get emotional support at home and are not given proper attention may go for bullying. Other factors such as teacher’s indifference and bad disciplining by parents can also cause bullying. Upto the age seven bullies do not harm others. Between the ages of 8 and 16, they target specific kids, those who are sensitive, cautious and quiet.

Effect of bullying on a child:- Bullying can be a humiliating and embarrassing experience for a child.  It can demoralize him. Children who are being bullied feel uncomfortable and worried, and dislike going to school. They are more likely to suffer from low self-esteem, depression, anxiety and loneliness. They may have stress-induced illnesses such as stomach- aches &  headaches.

How to face bully children:- If  your child is being bullied, do not take it lightly.  Teach him the ways how to interact and deal with the bullies. Tell him to avoid bullies, to stay away from them and not to make friendship with them. Tell him to remain calm and use humour when the bully children try to tease him. Teach your child to be confident and brave.

What should Parents of bully children do:- Parents of bullies should make their children aware about the consequences of their wrong deeds. They must warn them that their bullying cannot be tolerated. They should ask them in a loving way to stop bullying. Parents can also take psychological counseling from doctors.
