ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION

In this vast universe, our earth is so far the only planet known to be gifted with an environment that supports the existence of life. Environment is the natural surroundings, which are most essential for the sustenance of human life such as the earth’s atmosphere, healthy air and potable water, together with the plants and animals. But man as the most intelligent being on earth, has taken the bounties of nature for granted, little realizing that his spectacular progress is seriously disturbing the ecological balance, leading to dangerous pollution in the life supporting systems in the environment. Now the entire world has to pay a heavy penalty for pollution that threatens the very life of its people, its animal world  and plant life.

Pollution throughout the world, especially in the industrialized and technologically advanced countries has been known for a long time. Our India  with rocky mountainous ranges, thick dense forests and fertile plains have a  climate varied and vibrant where man and beast can live without real struggle for survival. But in spite of all these our motherland has been suffering a lot from the serious environmental disease of pollution.

In India the principal reason of environmental pollution is  the rapid industrialization for economic progress and advancement.   The widespread use of harmful insecticides, synthetic detergents, inorganic nitrogen fertilizers and other chemicals have contaminated the soil, water and air too. Nuclear testings have seriously violated environmental integrity and increased the rate of the congenital diseases. The wastes and effluents of factories and other sources including households dumped into rivers and lakes are polluting the water bodies.

The factories pumps tons and tons of oxides of sulphur, which is the main reason behind the devastating acid rains in summer that affects our skin and eyes. Other gases like carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide released from the growing number of vehicles and factories are spoiling the purity and freshness of air. These gases cause severe breathing problems and have resulted in the increase of atmospheric temperature leading to global warming. The mysterious sound produced by the vehicles and loud speakers are creating terrible noise pollution. Again, in the name of urbanization and industrialization man has been disturbing the ecological balance by deforestation.

So life in this earth has become painful and pathetic because of the incurable disease of pollution, which is coming like a monster with thousand hands. If proper steps are not taken, then a time may come when getting free air, pure water and living in a healthy environment will be a daydream.
