Our motherland India is an agricultural country and its prosperity depends mainly upon agriculture. So, the Indian farmer who produces grains for the entire country has a great contribution. He is the backbone of the nation and his role is highly praiseworthy. His importance in the economy of the country cannot be overemphasized. India, as a matter of fact, is a land of farmers.
The Indian farmer lives in village. About 75 percent of our population lives in villages. The Indian farmer is a hard-working man. He works from morning till evening in the scorching heat and biting cold. Early in the morning he drives his oxen to the fields. He ploughs the fields, sows seeds and waters the plants. He looks after the crops and saves them from stray cattle and wild animals. The whole year, the Indian farmer is busy and enjoys no holiday.
The Indian farmer leads a very simple life. He lives in a mud house, wears coarse clothes and takes very simple food. His property consists of a few bulls, a ploughshare and a few acres of land. He labours very hard, but lives from hand to mouth. The Indian farmer is generally illiterate and believes in old customs and superstitions. When the crops ripen, he feels happy. But, often during drought crops fail and he is in trouble. Again, in times of bad harvest he has little money to buy seeds and manure.
A farmer is the very soul of the nation. Now, the government has realized that an Indian farmer is the feeder of many mouths. The government is providing them better seeds, fertilizers, implements and financial aid for agriculture. But, these helps are not sufficient. The government must fulfill their basic necessities. We all must respect them.
