THE INFLUENCE OF EXAMPLES

Dear Children,

Life is a battle of learning where man fights to learn. Consciously or unconsciously we all are learning something in every waking hour of our life. In fact, the different sense organs are the means by which man is taught. But, apart from these sense-impressions, man also learns by precepts and by examples. Learning by example is the easiest and most impressive way because it is a concrete pattern of conduct set for man’s imitation. It appeals to man more as man prefers concrete to abstract.

Bright Stars, an example exercises tremendous influence on your character. Man is a born imitator and this imitative tendency is strongest in the children, like you. Your little and innocent mind and senses are always alert to copy the speech, manners, and ways of men around. But this imitative tendency does both good and harm to you. Kept within proper limits, guided by reason, thought and deliberation, it is always good and helpful. But blind imitation is bad and harmful. It will neither broaden your mind nor teach you self-reliance. It keeps you in perpetual nonage and your mind will be dwarfed and your faculties will be crippled by this blind imitation. Hence, it should be your aim to place as many as good examples as possible before you and avoid bad examples. Remember, it is very difficult to set good examples. Only a few, those are good, wise, kind and noble are capable for this great task. So, if you want to profit by examples, you should seek the company of good and wise mates who can set examples. A boy is known by the company he keeps. The very fact that you seek good company will show that you want to walk in the right path. Once you have set your foot on the right track and created the proper atmosphere, good examples will come automatically leaving a permanent impression on your mind. You all know how father of our nation Mahatma Gandhi during his school life told lie and stole gold from his brother’s armlet because of his bad companion. But, immediately after that he realized his mistakes and apologized his father.

Nice Guys, the reason why examples are so forceful or influential is that they all are practical demonstrations. You see before you how to behave, how to study, how to achieve success and how to shape your character and conduct. Examples present you everything in a cut and dried form, and you all must have that will power to acquire these. By following good examples you gradually acquire good habits and tendencies, and the sum total of these will make your life bright and prosperous. Therefore, after knowing the importance of examples in life, you should never miss any opportunity of profiting by them.
