CHARLES DICKENS

Prof. Dr. Sudarshan Patnaik

As a child, he was a brilliant student in his class. He was a voracious reader. He liked to read books and eventually  finished all the books, his father had in his book shelf. This quality foretold his bright future.

His parents were very poor and the poverty of his parents did not permit him to continue his study. He had to wind up his studies. At a very tender age of 12, he was forced to work in a factory. His work was to apply corks and label the bottles with  small wages. The meager earning was not sufficient to allow his both ends meet.

This was not the end of his misery. His parents could not pay back the debt, indebted due to paucity of funds and had to be imprisoned in the jail, meant for the crime of no payment of debts. Thus the child became completely alone and isolated. He toiled hard and tried to earn a little more by working extra time. Only on Sundays he could afford time to meet his parents in the jail. However with hard labour for more than three months he could arrange the amount, required to get his parents released from the jail.

After being released from the jail, the father of the child could manage to get a small job to manage the family. This helped the boy to start his  schooling again for which he had been longing for. In the meantime, the discontinuation of his study was more than one year.  By constant effort and continuous perseverance he could make up his loss and manage to do well in the class again, but this time also he could not continue for long. Finally he had to wind up his studies at the age of fifteen and there after he sought a service to work on.

During the free hours, he learnt short hand writing and eventually got an appointment in the court. During dictation, he depicted various characters of witnesses and respondents and also the complainants. He also learnt about criminal offence, the motive and the modus operandi of the crime. He developed an interest in analyzing and  delved deep into the characters, concentrated and concised them into a theme and thus, he started writing stories.

At his early twenties, he joined in a news paper establishment as a representative. His style and skill of presenting parliamentary news drew attention of many. As a result his salary was hiked, but what ever he was earning the measure share was spent in repaying the debt of his father. In later years, he started writing stories and novels. The experience, he had during his employment in court and subsequently as a  news paper representative helped him to publicise his language. His stories and articles in different magazines fetched him some more money. Gradually his writings were highly commended. This inspired him to write novels of different nobilities. All his writings got people’s applause. At the beginning he was writing in disguise with a fake name, but subsequently his name was published and he proved to be a great literary genius. He is non other than the world famous English novelist, Charles Dickens. He was born in 1842 and only at the age of 58 left the world with a great literary heritage behind.
