IS THE JANLOKPAL BILL AN EFFECTIVE MEASURE TO BATTLE CORRUPTION ?

Hello Everyone! A warm welcome to all of you, from me, Reema Mohanty, a student of Class VIII from ABC. Public School, Cuttack. I want to support, speak my heart and throw some light on the most highlighted recent topic “Is the Janlokpal Bill an Effective Measure to Battle Corruption?” In my opinion the Janlokpal Bill is the most effective measure to battle corruption.”

2G Spectrum Scam, Commonwealth Games Scam, Adarsh Society scam, so many mines scams…. I do hope you all are familiar with these words which have become common day to day events. These scams bear ample testimony to the fact that corruption has now assumed mammoth proportions and in our day-to-day life it has just become a very common phenomenon. This deep-rooted social menace has eaten into the vitals of India’s social and public life. Hence, a strong measure like the Janlokpal Bill is most needed to battle corruption.

Anna Hazare, the eminent social activist has now arrived as the anti-corruption crusader. Anna’s hunger strike and Jan Lokpal Bill campaign united the entire nation in the 2011 Indian anti-corruption movement. So here arises the question, what is Janlokpal bill? The JanLokpal Bill or Citizen’s ombudsman Bill is a draft prepared by prominent civil society activists seeking the appointment of a Jan Lokpal, an independent body that would investigate corruption cases, complete the investigation within a year and envisage trial in the case getting over in the next one year. The bill envisages a system where a corrupt person found guilty would go to jail within two years of the complaint being made and his ill-gotten wealth being confiscated. It also seeks power to the Jan Lokpal to prosecute politicians and bureaucrats without government permission.

If the Jan Lokpal Bill is made into a law, it will create an independent ombudsman body outside government control that will have the power to register and investigate complaints against politicians and public servants. No minister or bureaucrat will be able to influence the investigations. Cases against corrupt people will not linger on for years anymore. If any work of any citizen is not done in prescribed time in any government office, Lokpal will impose financial penalty on guilty officers, which will be given as compensation to the complainant. Hence, in my opinion the Janlokpal Bill is the most effective measure to battle corruption.

Bribes have become a common phenomenon. The persons who do not meet the demand of officials face numerous harassment and their works are delayed intentionally. Hence, in my opinion a strong Lokpal Bill like the Janlokpal Bill is the most effective measure to battle corruption. By this there will be definitely a fear among public servants before doing corruption. They will positively keep in mind the strong Janlokpal bill features providing strict and immediate actions and the confiscation of their ill-earned wealth.

Corrupt officials with the help of political leaders are doing corruption in broad day light. If they are caught in red hand while taking bribe, nothing happens. Because of their political patronage they march ahead without going to jail. If some officials are arrested and sent to prison, the result is too meaningless. They get bail after some days and the cases continue in courts for years. In the name of investigation, the process goes on for years, and some times continues after their  retirement. Nothing happens to them and to their illegally acquired properties. Hence, at the present age of rampant corruption only the Janlokpal Bill is the most effective measure to battle corruption.
