CHANGING ROLES OF TEACHERS

Chaudhury Satya Das, Editor, Education & Awareness

Teachers are the yardsticks that measure the achievements and aspirations of the nation.  The worth and potentialities of a country get evaluated in and through the works of the teachers. The people of a country are the enlarged replica of their teachers.  In reality, teachers are thus, true nation builders.

At present time, more and more children live in a household where both parents are working. They get not as much of time to share with their parents and spend maximum hours with their teachers, either in school or in tuition. Hence, now-a-days most children rely profoundly on their teachers for help, advice and guidance. No one can deny the fact that the role of teachers in students’ life is now very crucial right from the beginning when a child joins a play school. Therefore, teachers at the present scenario have to wear many hats. They have to assume in carrying out their duties, be communicators, disciplinarians, conveyors of information, evaluators, classroom managers, counselors, members of many teams and groups, decision-makers, role-models and surrogate parents.

The followings are the changing roles of the teachers at the present era.

Teachers, the Caretakers:- The first instance when a child comes in contact with a teacher is when he / she joins a Play school at the age of two or two plus. Before starting regular schools, a large number of parents enroll their children to play schools where the child is taken care of by teachers who feed them, play with them, teach them and take care of their every need.

Teachers, the True Guides:- In our present society, the social environment is so polluted that a child, if not gets proper guidance, can lose his way. Most families are nuclear ones where parents are too busy and restless. Hence, the teachers who are the second parents have to show the way and lead the pupils from darkness into light through thick jungles and dark glades. They are the wise priests in the holy temples of learning where all students are the devotees.

Teachers, the Inspirations:- Now-a-days most people are running after money without giving due time to their children and taking their proper care. But true teachers are rich without money and are recognized not in terms of bank balance, but in the bounteous love and inspiration they have evoked in their pupils. Teachers have to inspire the children to dream high, to study sincerely with devotion and dedication in order to excel in school and to make their future bright and successful.

Teachers, the Character Builders: - At the present time there is a severe crisis of noble character. Everywhere corruption and dishonesty are rampant. The great values of discipline, right conduct, honesty, righteousness, benevolence are hardly seen in children. Hence, the teachers have to build the character of the children as they are the emperors whose empires are carved in the grateful minds of their students which no pioneer on earth can shake.

Teachers, the Knowledge Banks:- Proper education is the need of the day if we want our nation to progress. Education in our country appears to be in a degrading condition. The present day educational system is only producing book worms having no adequate knowledge. Majority of the students lack fundamental knowledge in different areas of education. Hence, the teachers as the pivots of the educational system must be a knowledge bank in order to convey and share knowledge with the pupils. If a teacher fails in this, the result is chaotic for the life of children who will grow up to be the adult of tomorrow.

Teachers, the Friends:- The concept of teacher-student friendship is quite popular in present era. Those days have gone when teachers had to be very stern. There is no greater need for the cause of education today than the need for manly men and motherly women as teachers for the young. Now, the pupils of this ultra modern age can only be truly motivated by the teachers, if the teachers maintain a very healthy and cordial relationship with them. Hence, the teachers have to become the children’s trusted friend and teach them to open their minds to new activities, thoughts and information.

Hence, with the change of time and circumstances the teachers now must possess all the noble and great qualities to shape the career and life of the future citizens. If they do not keep the appropriate temperament, right attitudes, proper skills, and noble personality; then the proper development and growth of human civilizations and a good and prosperous world can not be possible.
