Kapilash is situated in the north eastern part of Dhenkanal district, Odisha, at a distance of 26 kilometres from Dhenkanal town. Located at a height of 2239 feet, Kapilash is famous for the temple of Lord Chandrasekhar or Shiva and its quite picturesque surroundings. The getaway is located atop an undulating lush green hillock. Narasinghdeva I constructed the temple in 1246 A.D. There are many legends about Kapilash pitha and its significance. Tradition descri- bes it as the ashram of saint Kapila, to some scholars it is the 2nd Kailash of Lord Shiva.
Topography:- The Kapilash mountain range boasts of 7 peaks & 9 ravines. The peak of Kapilash the heavenly abode of Lord Chandrasekhar is the highest peak with an altitude of 2239 ft. The holy shrine of Lord Chandrasekhar is situated at the height of 1500 ft. The climbing road has 12 bends & the pedestrians have the choice either to take this road or to as ascend 1352 stone steps passing through beautiful ravines to reach the temple. A small stream called “Vima Langala Siara” or “The plough marks of Bhima” cascades down the mountain, with tiny water falls.
Temple Architecture:- The height of the temple of Lord Chandrasekhar is 70 ft. The sculpture of the temple is of 3 kinds- northern, central and southern India respectively. The idols at Kapilash are culminations of the typical Kalinga Nagar type of sculpture. In the main temple, the self manifested ‘Linga” is worshipped with its large ‘Shakti’. The ‘Linga’ is surrounded by a silver cobra. To the west of the ‘ Linga’ a large “Salagrama” is placed on its separate platform. Adjacent to the ‘Salagrama’ there is the ‘ Banlinga’ made of beautiful green stones. Just infront of the ‘Santum-Sanctorum’ on a high pedestal sites ‘Brusava’ ever alert to carry the lord on his heavenly journeys’. The idol of Shiva is richly decorated and during religious festivals this holy shrine sees innumerable number of devotees coming from every corner of the world. During the festive occasion of Shivratri the idol of Shiva is specially decorated with gold ornaments.
The temple is surrounded by other holy shrines. Just near the ‘Jagamohan’ there are idols of Lord “Ganesh” and Shree Shree ‘Chandi’ made of black granite. Just behind the Brusava and above the Bhog Mandap, there is the wooden mohana an example of Oriya wooden sculpture. The “Payomru- takunda” exists towards the north of the Brusava. There is also natural source of holy water which is used only for the worship of lord Chandrasekhar. The Lord’s kitchen is situated at the south-east corner or ‘Agnikona’ of the temple. The ‘Papanasini kunda’ is situated towards the west of the kitchen and as the popular beliefs so it washes all the sins of the devotees. Close to the southern wall of ‘ Papanasini kunda’ there is the ‘Mirchi kunda’. The ‘Japamandap’ is situated along with its beautiful wooden Mohana towards the south of the temple. The Mohana is decorated with the idols of ‘Dasabatara’. Devi Parbati’s temple is situated towards the north of main temple. Lord Nurshingh’s stone idol is situated towards the west of Mahashakti Parbati inside the same room along with his divine spouse.
The outer surface of the temple has 3 smaller shrine typically of Siva Temples every where. The southern shrine harbors lord ‘Ganesh’ with ‘Kartikaya’ to the west and ‘Ganga Devi’ with her matted locks to the south. Just above ‘Kartikaiya’ and below the ‘Dadhinauti’ sits Lord Jagannath sculpted out of the temple surface. At the ‘Singha Dwara’, there are two lions sitting at both sides of two huge wooden doors. At the top of the main temple, instead of the usual ‘Trisla’ there is the ‘Ardhachandra Pinaka’ made of an alloy of 8 metals.
The beautiful black idol of Lord Narayan Jew, in a separate temple, is situated at the north-east corner of the temple complex and can be reached after a climb of 100 steps. Towards the south of Lord Narayan’s temple, there is another natural source of water called the ‘Manikarnika Kunda’ and towards further south, there is the ancient temple of Lord Biswanath. Just near the ‘Singha Dwara’ on a high pedestal there are beautiful black idols of ‘Vairaba’, ‘Charchika’ and ‘Chamunda’ towards the west of the ‘Singhdwara’ is the end or the beginning of the temple complex with a small temple the seat of ‘Hanuman’.
The entire mountain’ known to be full of spiritual vibrations is the ancient abode of many ascetics. Prominent among these are the “Kendupania Cave”, the “Atandi Pani Cave”, Devi Sitas’s Birth Place called “Sita Entudisala”.
Staying Facility:- P.W.D has a Bungalow situated at Deogaon at the foot hill of Kapilash and another Bunglow close to the temple complex at the hill top. The tourism Dept. has a ‘panthanivas ‘at the foot hill of Kapilash.
There are two Dharmasalas situated at close proximity to the temple complex. At the foot hills, the Deer Park, a beautiful flower Garden, and a Science Park are major tourist attractions. There is a “Kanaka Champa” Garden near the Deer park and a large cashew orchard extending over 800 acres of land beyond the ‘Panthanivas’. At the foot hills as well as the hill top, there are several, Resturants and other shops which supply necessary provisions to the tourists. Village Deogaon, situated at the foot hills of Kapilash, has a Hospital, a post office, a bank & many educational institutions.
