ORIGIN OF ANIMAL NAMES

Almost all animals have a definite meaning of their names. The names of most of the animals have come from different languages of the world.

Cow’ comes from Iceland where the name is ‘Ku’. The word ‘bull’ comes from the Anglo-Saxon verb ‘belan’, which means to roar to below. The name ‘ox’ is a term of Iceland.

The term ‘Cat’ comes from a French word ‘chat’. ‘Mouse’ came from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘mus’.

‘Leopard’ derives its name from the Latin word ‘Leopardus’, which means a spotted lion.

‘Deer’ is from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘deor’ meaning a wild animal.

‘Camel’ gets its name from the Arabic word ‘gamel’. ‘Giraffe’ is also from the  Arabic  word ‘ziraboh’  which means     long neck.              

‘Hippopotamus’ comes from two Greek words ‘hippo’ means ‘horse’ and ‘potamus’ means ‘river’. ‘Rhinoceros’ is also  from two Greek words ‘rhino’ – the nose and ‘keras’ – a horn.

‘Duck’ gets its name from the English word ‘duce’.
