Most people in our present society are worried about their professions or careers. They are dissatisfied with their jobs and always remain in search of a career shift. Moreover, occupational unrest and switching of jobs have become more common. This is because at present global scenario it does not need to have been a part of the field for 20 or more years to become successful. There are thousands of instances how many persons have achieved greater success, name and fame and also wealth by changing their professions and career. Just look at some surprising first careers of some influential figures of the world.
Abraham Lincoln:- Abraham Lincoln (1809 –1865) was the 16th President of the United States, serving from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. He led the country through the American Civil War ending slavery. Born in a very poor family, Lincoln was received very little education. When he was 15, he earned his living, wandering from place to place. At the age of 20, he got the job of a shop assistant. He bought books and began to study by himself. He passed Law and started legal practice. In 1847, Lincoln was elected for the American Congress. At last he became the President of U.S.A in 1861.
Michael Faraday:- Michael Faraday (1791–1867) was an English chemist and physicist. He discovered electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism, and laws of electrolysis. Due to his efforts electricity became viable for use. Faraday received little formal education. At the age of 14 he worked at a local bookbinder and bookseller. During his 7 years work, he read many books and developed an interest in science, especially in electricity. At the age of 20, Faraday attended lectures by the eminent English chemist Humphry Davy. Faraday sent Davy a 300 page book based on notes taken during the lectures. Davy became surprised and employed Faraday as his secretary. Faraday became a great scientist.
Walt Disney:- Walt Disney (1901 – 1966) was an American film producer, director, screenwriter and animator well-known for his influence in the field of entertainment during the 20th century. He was the founder of Walt Disney Productions, which later became one of the best-known motion picture producers in the world. During his youth, Walt Disney was rejected by the army and struggled to find a work. He finally got a job working as a designer for newspaper and magazine ads at an art studio. Disney started studying animation. He then began his own business and established his company Walt Disney Productions.
Leo Tolstoy:- Leo Tolstoy (1828 –1910) was a renowned Russian novelist and short story writer. His two most famous works ‘War and Peace’ and ‘Anna Karenina’, are acknowledged as two of the greatest novels of all time. Tolstoy was born in the Tula region of Russia. In 1845, he left his studies while studying law at Kazan University. In 1851, after running up heavy gambling debts, he joined the army. During his 1857 visit, Tolstoy witnessed a public execution in Paris, a traumatic experience that would mark the rest of his life. His European trip in 1860–61 shaped his literary transformation. He gave up his job, founded many schools and started writing.
Nelson Mandela:- Nelson Mandela (born 18 July 1918) was the President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was a great freedom fighter and was the first South African president to be elected. Mandela has received more than 250 awards including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize. Nelson Mandela was the first member of his family to attend a school. During his Graduation he became involved in a Students’ movement and was told to leave the university. Mandela became a guard at a mine. He later worked as a clerk at a Johannesburg law firm. While working at there, Mandela completed his BA. He joined the African National Congress and became its leader. In 1962 he was arrested and sentenced to prison for 27 years. Following his release from prison in 1990, Mandela led his party that led to multi-racial democracy in 1994.
Anna Hazare:- Kisan Baburao Hazare (born 15 June 1937), popularly known as Anna Hazare is an eminent Indian social activist. Anna’s hunger strike and Jan Lokpal Bill campaign united the entire nation in the 2011 Indian anti-corruption movement. Following the nonviolent methods of Mahatma Gandhi, Anaji brought a great revolution in our country and shook the foundation of the Union Government. Anna Hazare was born as Kisan Baburao Hazare in a Marathi family in Bhingar, near to Ahmednagar. Due to poverty his family moved to their ancestral village of Ralegan Siddhi, where they owned a small amount of agricultural land. Kisan’s schooling ended in the 7th class because of poverty. He started selling flowers at the Dadar railway station in Mumbai. Hazare was recruited as a soldier in 1963. During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, Hazare was posted at the border. He was the sole survivor of an enemy attack while he was driving a truck. He spent his spare time reading the works of Swami Vivekananda, Gandhi, and Vinoba Bhave. After completing his 12 years of service, he came to his village in 1975, where he started his movement and became a legendary figure, Anna Hazare.
J. K. Rowling:- J. K. Rowling (born 31 July 1965) is a British author best known as the creator of the Harry Potter fantasy series. The Potter books have gained worldwide attention, won multiple awards, sold more than 400 million copies and been the basis for a popular series of films, making Rowling a multi-millionaire. Rowling was born in Glouce- stershire, England. After completing her BA, Rowling moved to London to work for Amnesty International. Rowling then moved to Porto, Portugal to teach English. While there, in 1992, she married Portuguese television journalist. Their daughter was born in 1993. Rowling and her husband separated in 1993. She with her daughter moved to Scotland. She was jobless. During this period Rowling was diagnosed with clinical depression. She wrote in many cafes, especially, wherever she could get her daughter to fall asleep. When her books published, she became a world famous writer.
Dhirubhai Ambani:- Dhirubhai Ambani (1932 –2002) was an Indian business magnate and entrepreneur who founded Reliance Industries. His life has often been referred to as a true “rags to riches” story. During his school life, on weekends, Dhirubhai was selling onion/potato fries at village fairs to earn money for his family. After matriculation, Dhirubhai went to Aden, a seaport city in Yemen and started his career as a clerk. At Aden, Dhirubhai started small trading business with Arab merchants in the 1950s. After making modest profits, he moved to Mumbai in 1958 to start his own business and opened a textile mill near Ahmedabad. Dhirubhai founded Reliance Industries in 1958.
