Pandit Godavarish Mishra
A great teacher of Satyabadi Vana Bidyalaya, eminet poet, writer and freedom fighter. He was born in Banapur (famous for the temple of Devi Bhagabati) in the year 1886. He was the education minister of Orissa and had founded the Utkal University. Pandit Godavarish passed away in the year 1956.
Dr. Baidyanath Mishra (1920) – Dr. Baidyanath Mishra, a renowned name in Orissa, is a great educationist, eminent economist and writer. He is considered as one of the top economists of India. He started his career as a lecturer in Economics in Raven- shaw College, then became professor and Dean in OUAT, Head of Economics Deptt. in Utkal University and Vice Chancellor of OUAT. He was also the vice-president of State planning commission. He has written 37 books in Economics and a number of research articles.
Sri Ramchandra Bhanja (1870-1912) Sri Ramchandra Bhanja was the enlighten ruler of the Princely state of Mayurbhanj. He worked for the all round development of Mayurbhanj state and implemented various welfare schemes. He formed the State Council for administration in the state and brought about reforms in the sphere of language, health and administration. He also started the scientific operations of iron mines for the first time. He commissioned the narrow-gauge railway line from Rupsa to Baripada. He presided over the first meeting of Utkal Sammilani on December 3, 1933. He had a great role in the setting up of S.C.B. Medical College and Hospital and Sri Ramchandra Bhaban, Cuttack.
Malati Choudhury- (1904-1998): A great freedom fighter, social activist, Gandhian true human being and a patriot in its real sense. Inspired by Gandhiji, she took part in our freedom movement and was imprisoned many times. She had a great role in Salt Satyagraha. Along with her husband Sri Nabakrushna Choudhry, the former Chief Minister of Orissa, she has done many great social works.
Chandra Sekhar Behera- (1873-1938): Oriya language was abolished in Sambalpur and Hindi was made compulsory there. Chandra Sekhar as the first lawyer of Sambalpur united people and faught against it. Due to his great efforts, the British government again reintroduced Oriya. He had also a great role in the unification of Sambalpur with Orissa instead of M.P.
Kelu Charan Mohapatra: The great Odissi dancer, the true ambassadar of art and culture of Orissa. Kelu Charan Mohapatra was a wealthy son of Utkal Mata. He was the man, who had a praise worthy role in highlighting Odissi dance through out the world. He was awarded with Padma Vibhusana award by the Govt. of India for his greate contribution.
Prof.Pranakrushna Parija(1891- 1978) - Prof. Parija was a great scientist, educationist and writer. He was a professor of Botany who had made several successful researches with Nobel laureate British scientist Dr. Blackman on the breathing system of fruits. He was the Principal of Ravenshaw College, vice-chancellor of Utkal University and Director of Agriculture, Govt. of Orissa
KuntalaKumari Sabat(1900-1938)-Kuntala Kumari was a great poet and novelist who has written many outstanding books like ‘Prema Chintamani’, ‘Raghu Arakshita’ and ‘Anjali’ etc. She is known as the Nightingale of Orissa and called as Utkal Bharati. Though she was a doctor by profession, she was more famous for her literary contribution.
Bimbadhar Burma(1901-1953)- Bimbadhar Burma was an eminent artist of Orissa. His was a painter, sculptor and poet. His famous paintings are Pallibadhu, Deva dasi, Godhuli ragini etc. The figure of Utkalmata is the creation of Bimbadhar Burma.
Madhusudan Das (1847-1934) : A great freedom fighter, politician, poet, first minister of Orissa, first to go Europe (England) to study. He was the main architect of Modern Orissa and is popularly known as ‘Utkal Gourav’. He was famous as Madhu Barrister as he was the first Oriya Advocate. The construction of Orissa- the separate Oriya speaking state is due to his great sacrifices.
Acharya Harihar - A great teacher, social worker freedom fighter and scholar. Being a renowned lawyer in Kolkata, he preferred to be a teacher. He was a great teacher in P.M. Academy of Cuttack and in Satyabadi Bana Vidyalaya of Gopabandhu. He was imprisoned by taking part in freedom movement.
