Memory is one of the foundations of success in life. Without good memory it is very difficult to lead healthy and successful life. For students, proper memory power is most essential. Children having good memory study well and secure better percentage of marks. On the other hand children with poor memory are considered as weak students. So it is clear that a bad memory results in inefficiency, failure and lots of troubles.

What is memory? Memory is the ability of the brain to keep a record of the past and present events. We all believe that good memory is god gifted and a child inherits it with his birth. It is true, but on the other hand a child having average or weak memory can also excel in his study as well as in life by increasing his memory power. William James, the father of modern psychology, states that an average human being does not develop more than ten percent of his latent mental abilities. The rest remains unexploited. So, you can improve the memory power of your child and your child can do better than before.

To improve the mental power or memory of your children, here are some psychologically and scientifically tested ways.

1. Give your child the books he likes- Small children love books and like to read. Reading is to mind what exercise is to body. It is hundred percent true that what the child reads eagerly becomes a blue print in his mind and that enrich his memory. But reading becomes unpleasant to a child when you force or pressure him to read the books of your choice. The child’s mind is occupied with worry and tension.  So, provide the books which your child desires to read.

2. Allow your child to read the subjects he likes - We all want our children to devote more time on Math, Science and English. It is a proven fact that those are good in Math and English can excel in any subject. But if the child is fond of any other subject, allow him to be a master in that subject. Automatically you can find your child not only excelling in his favourite subject but in all other subjects.

3. Develop his writing skill - It is seen that small children avoid writing more. But writing plays a vital role in improving memory power. At home you insist your child to learn and revise the questions & answers of a chapter by writing, at least two or three times. You can observe within ten days what percentage of the memory of your child will increase.

4. Improve his concentration - It is difficult on the part of a child to concentrate properly. But concentration is most necessary for memory. Make the study place of your child a calm and silent place free from the disturbances by TV, CD player, computer and visitors to your house. Arrange a particular place for regular study with chair, table and proper light. Proper concentration can transfer a disturbed mind into particular and improves memory brilliantly.

5. Motivate your child to be curious- In general, curiosity is common to all children. But the children, who are more curious, have better memory and developed thought power. As necessity is the mother of invention, in the similar way, a curious child has ample opportunity to develop his memory to the maximum extent.

6. Develop your child’s power of observation - Human eyes are to see. But what we see, we do not remember all those. So, insist your child to observe the required things efficiently. When a child observes seriously, he gives his mind something to work upon. The great scientists of the world have been people who learned to observe closely and seriously.

7. Develop his listening habit- Insist your child to listen properly and perfectly to his teacher in class. If a child listens properly, his brain power is developed. Good and developed thinking increases the memory. Hence, tell your child to listen properly.

8. Allow your child to play- Allow your child to play the indoor or outdoor game of his choice minimum one hour in a day. Games provide fun, pleasure and make the mind relaxed. A relaxed mind is capable of remembering more than a tensed one.

9. Tell your child not to get angry, afraid or stressed- Human brain has millions of neurons which are responsible for memory power. Every time a child gets angry, afraid or stressed, he destroys hundreds of neurons. Again, a stressed or worried mind cannot remember anything, and instead of remembering, the child will start forgetting.

10.Teach your child to pray every day- Prayer is most essential for a child. It keeps him active and delightful, and increases his memory by developing his concentration and will power. By chanting a Mantra rhythmically, a child gets divine blessings.
